AMD presenta le schede Radeon Pro 500, per MacBook Pro e iMac

Durante l'evento WWDC 2017 AMD ha svelato le GPU che Apple ha scelto per i suoi sistemi di nuova generazione. Le prestazioni sono inferiori rispetto a quelle delle corrispondenti schede della serie RX.

Apple continua ad affidarsi interamente sulle schede grafiche AMD per i suoi Mac e qualche settimana prima dell’arrivo della serie RX 500, il WWDC 2017 segna il lancio della gamma Radeon Pro 500.

Si tratta di schede video molto simili anche se le Radeon Pro 500 sono pensate più per un pubblico professionale. Le ottimizzazioni applicate da AMD consentono di trarre il meglio durante l’utilizzo di software di disegno e rendering pur mantenendo contenuti i consumi energetici.

La serie Radeon Pro 500 comprende cinque schede grafiche utilizzate nei nuovi MacBook Pro e iMac: Radeon Pro 555, 560, 570, 575 e 580. Nella maggior parte dei casi le performance non sono paragonabili alle schede della serie RX.
Una RX 570, ad esempio, garantisce circa il 40% di performance in più rispetto alla Pro 570; la RX 560 ha una potenza computazionale di 2,6 TeraFLOPS mentre la Pro 560 si ferma a 1,9 TeraFLOPS.

Le prestazioni risultano “castrate” soprattutto perché le GPU inserite nei MacBook Pro e negli iMac devono necessariamente adeguarsi ai parametri di consumo energetico, piuttosto stringenti, che Apple ha imposto.

La scheda più interessante è indubbiamente la Radeon Pro 580, dotata di 36 unità computazionali, 2304 shader e capace di “erogare” 5,5 TeraFLOPS (il 12% in meno rispetto alla RX 580).
