La settimana prossima, lunedì 25 settembre, Apple rilascerà macOS High Sierra.
Il nuovo Apple File System (APFS), che la società pensava inizialmente di attivare per default su tutti i dispositivi macOS, non sarà però per tutti.
APFS è un file system più moderno rispetto a HFS+ ed è ottimizzato per l’utilizzo con le unità SSD e le memorie flash. È più sicuro, offre una migliore protezione in caso di crash, integra un sistema per la gestione di backup incrementali e supporta nativamente la crittografia: Apple presenta il suo file system APFS, migrazione automatica da HFS+.

Stando alle ultime notizie, il file system APFS potrà essere utilizzato solo sui sistemi macOS basati su storage flash. Di conseguenza non potrà essere adottato sugli iMac e sui Mac Mini che poggiano su Fusion Drive.

Durante la fase di beta testing di macOS High Sierra i Fusion Drive furono convertiti al file system APFS ma il supporto è stato poi rimosso e mai nuovamente implementato.

Apple ha confermato che APFS non sarà disponibile con i Fusion Drive e ha fornito le istruzioni per convertire le unità nel formato HFS+ standard.

Le macchine macOS basate su SSD, invece, saranno automaticamente convertite a APFS (vedere questo documento di supporto).
