C'è un bug nei processori Skylake di sesta generazione. Lo ha confermato Intel in risposta alle segnalazioni pervenute dai matematici del Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS).

C’è un bug nei processori Skylake di sesta generazione. Lo ha confermato Intel in risposta alle segnalazioni pervenute dai matematici del Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS).

Nell’elaborare un numero primo particolarmente grande, i processori Skylake potrebbero bloccarsi mandando in crash l’intero sistema.

I portavoce di Intel hanno comunque spiegato che il problema potrebbe presentarsi solo nel caso in cui la CPU Skylake si dovesse trovare a gestire specifici carichi di lavoro, estremamente gravosi.

Ad aver messo in difficoltà Skylake è stato un programma chiamato Prime95, applicazione adoperata dai ricercatori del GIMPS per calcolare i cosiddetti numeri primi di Mersenne.

Il bug sarebbe stato originariamente individuato dalla comunità di hardwareluxx.de mentre lo studio è stato poi perfezionato dai membri del GIMPS.

Il tool Prime95 è stato sempre utilizzato, storicamente, per mettere sotto stress vari configurazioni hardware. Esso usa la trasformata di Fourier, ben nota ai matematici, per moltiplicare numeri estremamente grandi. L’utilizzo dell’esponente 14.942.209 ha determinato il manifestarsi del bug nei nuovi processori Skylake.

I portavoce di Intel hanno spiegato che la società è già al lavoro con le aziende partner per “dribblare” il problema a livello BIOS.
