Capability Access Manager: bug di Windows 11 riempie il disco. Occupati fino a 300 GB

Un bug di Windows 11 può far crescere il file di Capability Acces sManager fino a centinaia di GB, saturando l'unità locale e rallentando il sistema. Microsoft ha confermato il problema ed è al lavoro su una patch.

Con Windows 11 Microsoft ha introdotto una gestione molto più sofisticata delle autorizzazioni concesse alle applicazioni. Dietro le quinte entra in gioco il Capability Access Manager (CAM), un componente incaricato di monitorare l’accesso a risorse come webcam, microfono, posizione geografica, screenshot, notifiche, contatti e altre funzionalità “delicate” del sistema operativo.

Nella maggior parte dei casi questo meccanismo resta invisibile all’utente. In alcuni sistemi, però, il database associato al servizio può crescere in maniera anomala fino a occupare decine o addirittura centinaia di gigabyte, causando saturazione dello spazio disco e rallentamenti evidenti.

La crescita anomala delle dimensioni del file CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal, nascosto nella directory di sistema %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager\, inizialmente osservata in ambienti enterprise con migliaia di endpoint, sta coinvolgendo anche utenti privati, amministratori di sistema e professionisti IT che si ritrovano improvvisamente con workstation rallentate, SSD saturi e sistemi praticamente inutilizzabili.

Cos’è e come Capability Access Manager

Abbiamo detto che il file “incriminato”, CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal, fa parte del sistema interno con cui Windows gestisce i permessi di accesso alle funzionalità “sensibili”. Il database principale è CapabilityAccessManager.db, mentre il file .db-wal rappresenta il cosiddetto Write Ahead Log di SQLite.

SQLite utilizza il WAL come buffer temporaneo per registrare rapidamente le operazioni prima che siano consolidate nel database principale. In condizioni normali questo file resta minuscolo, generalmente nell’ordine di pochi kilobyte. Il problema nasce quando il processo di consolidamento non avviene più correttamente: il WAL continua a crescere accumulando scritture senza mai “scaricarsi” nel database principale.

Le dimensioni del file CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal osservate nei sistemi colpiti dal problema sono impressionanti: alcune macchine ospitano un file di dimensioni pari a 50 o 100 GB; in alcuni casi è capitato di vederne uno pesante oltre 300 GB! In molti casi l’anomalia viene a galla soltanto quando il sistema resta improvvisamente senza spazio disponibile.

La situazione è resa ancora più complicata dal fatto che strumenti come WinDirStat spesso non riescono a individuare correttamente il file, poiché la cartella è accessibile soltanto all’account SYSTEM di Windows. Agli utenti appare semplicemente una gigantesca quantità di spazio “sconosciuto” occupato sull’unità di memorizzazione.

Perché il file cresce senza controllo e satura il disco in Windows 11

Al momento non c’è una conclusione definitiva sulla problematica legata al malfunzionamento di Capability Access Manager su Windows 11. Le indagini finora svolte, tuttavia, convergono su un elemento comune: la geolocalizzazione.

Diversi software sembrano innescare il problema effettuando richieste continue ai servizi di geolocalizzazione. Tra quelli citati nelle analisi compaiono SmartByte / Rivet Networks, Geocomply, Rainmeter, applicazioni WiFi, strumenti di telemetria, software OEM preinstallati.

È però altamente improbabile che tanti sviluppatori abbiano introdotto contemporaneamente lo stesso errore: l’ipotesi più plausibile è che un aggiornamento recente di Windows abbia modificato il comportamento interno del sistema CAM, rendendolo incapace di gestire correttamente l’enorme volume di richieste.

Microsoft ha confermato il bug di Capability Access Manager

Uno degli aspetti più importanti emersi a maggio 2026 è che Microsoft ha ufficialmente riconosciuto l’esistenza del problema che riguarda la crescita incontrollata del file CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal. Il team Windows starebbe lavorando a una correzione definitiva che dovrebbe pervenire tra fine giugno e luglio prossimi attraverso Windows Update.

In caso di problemi, l’intervento consigliato per recuperare spazio su disco e tirare il fiato in attesa di una patch definitiva, consiste nel cancellare il file CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal. Poiché si tratta di un elemento protetto, per evitare di modificare i permessi sulla cartella di sistema di Capability Access Manager, la strada migliore da imboccare è quella che illustriamo di seguito:

  1. Digitare cmd nella casella di ricerca del menu Start o nella barra delle applicazioni quindi scegliere Esegui come amministratore.
  2. Impartire i seguenti due comandi per assumere temporaneamente la proprietà della cartella:
    takeown /f "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager" /r /d s
    icacls "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager" /grant administrators:F /t
  3. Usare il comandonet stop cmsvc per arrestare il servizio Capability Access Manager.
  4. Eliminare soltanto il file WAL:
    del "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager\*.db-wal"
  5. Premere Windows+X quindi scegliere Windows PowerShell (Admin) oppure Terminale (Admin) quindi ripristinare i permessi originali sulla cartella del Capability Access Manager incollando quanto segue:
    $acl = Get-Acl "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager"
    $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm("O:SYG:SYD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)")
    Set-Acl "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager" $acl
  6. Riavviare il PC. Windows 11, tra l’altro, provvederà a ricreare il file WAL con una minima occupazione di spazio.

Conclusioni

La crescita incontrollata del file CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal si sta trasformando in uno dei bug più fastidiosi emersi recentemente in Windows 11, soprattutto perché può saturare completamente l’SSD senza che l’utente riesca a individuare facilmente l’origine del problema. Microsoft ha ormai confermato l’esistenza dell’anomalia e sta lavorando a una correzione definitiva prevista attraverso Windows Update nelle prossime settimane.

Nel frattempo, la stessa Microsoft ha raccomandato di eliminare esclusivamente il file WAL – senza toccare il database principale CapabilityAccessManager.db – come soluzione temporanea per recuperare spazio su disco e ripristinare il corretto funzionamento del sistema.

Per approfondire, si trovano diversi spunti anche nel forum di Rainmeter, segno evidente che il problema – anche verificando il numero di lamentele che stanno progressivamente apparendo online – è tutt’altro che infrequente. La platea di utenti interessati alla risoluzione dell’anomalia appare davvero molto ampia.
