Sun Microsystems ha deciso di estendere il ciclo di vita della versione 1.4 del suo pacchetto Java Standard Edition attraverso uno speciale programma. In questo modo la vecchia release di Java, anziché essere ritirata (Sun aveva programmato di dismetterla entro quest’estate), continuerà ad essere supportata addirittura sino al 2017.
Questa possibilità sarà offerta, però, solamente dietro l’adesione, da parte degli interessati, ad un programma di abbonamento a pagamento.

Sebbene gran parte degli sviluppatori stiano aggiornando le proprie applicazioni per supportare le più recenti versioni di Java, esistono realtà aziendali in cui Java 1.4 è ancora ampiamente utilizzato. La possibilità di sottoscrivere un abbonamento consente di effettuare una migrazione senza fretta, accertando eventuali incompatibilità delle soluzioni software in uso.
