Sun Microsystems ha annunciato la disponibilità della versione finale di VirtualBox 3.0, software per la virtualizzazione distribuito sotto licenza GNU GPLv2. Oltre alla risoluzione di molteplici bug e ad alcune migliorie prestazionali, la terza versione di VirtualBox porta al debutto diverse novità.

Il software include il supporto per il “Guest Symmetric multiprocessing” (SMP) consentendo l’impiego di un numero massimo di CPU virtuali (processori VT-x e AMD-V) pari a 32. E’ stato inoltre introdotto il supporto sperimentale per Direct3D 8 e 9 all’interno delle macchine virtuali create con l’applicazione di Sun.
Aggiunto anche il supporto per la versione 2.0 delle librerie OpenGL, fruibili nei sistemi operativi “guest” Windows, Linux e Solaris. In questo modo, le applicazioni 3D sono in grado di operare senza problemi anche nelle macchine virtuali VirtualBox.

La versione per host Windows è scaricabile facendo riferimento a questa scheda. Il prodotto è comunque multipiattaforma: coloro che volessero utilizzare VirtualBox 3.0, ad esempio, su sistemi Linux o Mac OS X, possono scaricare le versioni “ad hoc” a questo indirizzo.
